Business Developer

Role overview

A Business Developer is a professional responsible for the commercial development and growth of a company. They are also known as Sales Developers or Sales Engineers. Experts in their field, they are constantly on the lookout for new ways to make an organisation earn money. The Business Developer identifies development opportunities and forges partnerships to achieve this objective. In other words, they implement a number of growth strategies using their skills and the training they have received. Depending on the size of the company in which they work, they may be part of a sales team or work alone. The job of Business Developer is a demanding one, requiring a high degree of versatility.

The Business Developer's mission is to optimise a company's positioning in a specific market. All his tasks should improve sales, which in turn will lead to the growth of the company in which he works. In this way, the Business Developer contributes to achieving organisational, sales and marketing objectives over the long term. These skills enable them to establish a relationship of trust with customers while identifying commercial opportunities. They negotiate and conclude commercial agreements. A Business Developer works closely with the company's Marketing and Sales Manager or Director. This means staying close to every manager and marketing department staff member. Main Responsibilities

A Business Developer's main task is to develop a company and generate income. Working closely with the marketing department, they can take charge of implementing the sales strategy to be adopted. This can be done in collaboration with the management, as is the case with start-ups and small businesses.

However, the tasks of a Business Developer can be broader and more varied. The size of the company, the sector of activity and the strategy defined are the criteria that will define the tasks. There is no fixed list of tasks for professionals in this position, but in general, Business Developers are expected to :

  • Identify potential markets and give the company the opportunity to access them
  • Carry out market research to identify the organisation's needs
  • Look for new types of products or services and/or think about improving what is already available with a view to improving the customer experience.
  • Attract prospects and turn them into customers or consumers with an effective sales and marketing strategy
  • Drawing up and supervising actions to ensure that business plans are implemented
  • Maximising the company's B-to-B partnerships
  • Maintain and develop one or more customer portfolios
